The Leather Report

Caitlan Moneta -

Leather is a wardrobe classic that continues to reinvent itself. Its long-held popularity hinges on its ability to embody many a mood … edgy, avant-garde, sleek and chic.

The luxurious material has found its way back onto our style radar this season, having turned up on everything from jackets and jeans to skirts and tops. But what is the most modern way to wear it?

The key lies in the effortless marriage of hard-edged leather with softer silhouettes and fabrics. And this formula works for any occasion. Daytime, date night, even dog walking, is leveled up with a little leather.

For laid-back looks, consider swapping denim for leather. Cambio’s vegan leather jeans have all the off-duty appeal of their cotton cousins, but are a polished foil for quilted coats, cozy shackets and chunky knits. Straight isn’t the only silhouette either. Cambio’s cropped culottes with elasticized waist and BA&SH’s black stretch leggings work equally well for Sunday morning strolls when dressed down with flannel and fleece.

Tailoring is traditional when it comes to a corporate closet. But who said that must come in the form of strict suiting? Opt instead for a sartorial surprise with Frame’s croc embossed leather skirt. The elongated length commands attention, as does the luxurious chocolate brown colour. Teamed with a luminous silk shirt or deliciously soft sweater, it’s a look that’s seriously sophisticated.

Date night and leather go hand in hand. This is where you can up the ante with more directional styles and light-catching hardware. Vince’s moto jacket features an oversize lapel, ribbed panels and asymmetrical zip that looks especially chic against more feminine pieces like DVF’s mesh midi dress or mod floral mini. Finish with a hint of glittering jewelry and a tiny top-handled bag.
